Where does the name "Garzotto" come from? Where did our ancestors come from?

In Rovigno d'Istria (now belonging to Croatia), there is a street named after one of the Garzottos. I found this image on the Internet at http://digilander.iol.it/arup/quadri2.html
I also found the following text on the Internet at a genealogy site for Rovigno:
Garzotto - famiglia presente a Rovigno dal 1541 ed estintasi poco dopo il 1830; Etim.: da 'garzo' strumento irto di punte di acciaio usato per pettinare la lana dal lat. pop. Cardeus, classico Carduus = cardo. Da cui deriva anche il verbo rovignese zgarzà = pettinare, cardare la lana e scardasà, stesso significato.
If this is true, then there might be completely different roots than "Alpe Garzott".
Also found this in the history of Rovigno:
1735 - il rovignese Nicolò Garzotto detto Sorra, già comandante del castello di S. Andrea del Lido, viene nominato dal veneto senato Sopraintendente generale delle artiglierie di terra ferma.
And:
Garzotto Lorenzo, sacerdote a Rovigno, di Francesco, da Valle d'Istria immatricolato il : 30/11/1746 dottorato in utroque iure more nobilium in S.C. il 5/5/1750 legista, 1746-1750
And:
"Rovinj pilots (peots) led merchantships through northern Adriatic and through Venetian lagoon. Three out of twelve Rovinj captains of warships were invested with the order of Knights of St Mark. One of central ascends of the old town was given the name after one of these brave captains - Garzotto."
There even is a historical text mentioning captain Garzotto at http://digilander.libero.it/arupin/castiel8.html and http://digilander.libero.it/arupin/castiel9.html. The name used in the original (not yet translated to Italian) text is "Garzuoto". I did not find any other traces of that name.

In Rovigno d'Istria (auch: Rovinj) im heutigen Kroatien gibt es eine Strasse, die nach einem Garzotto benannt ist. Das obige Bild habe ich unter http://digilander.iol.it/arup/quadri2.html gefunden.
Auf einer Ahnenforschungs-Seite der Stadt habe ich ausserdem gefunden:

Also haben Garzottos dort von 1541 bis gegen 1830 gelebt. Die Hypothese, dass der Name von "garzo/cardo", zu deutsch "Karde" her kommt, scheint mir nicht sehr glaubwürdig. "Alp Garzott" wirkt naheliegender. Aber wer weiss...
Weiter:

Also kam Nicolò Garzotto aus Rovigno und wurde zum Artillerie-General ernannt (stimmt diese Übersetzung?).
Weiter:

Also ein weiterer Garzotto aus Rovigno und ähnlicher Zeit, der sein Doktorat machte.
Ausserdem:

Also wurde dieser Garzotto, Kapitän eines Kriegsschiffs, das Handelsschiffe begleitet, zu einem Ritter des St. Markus-Ordens geschlagen und die Strasse in Rovigno ist nach ihm benannt.
Ein historischer Text, welche die Heldentaten dieses Garzottos beschreibt, ist zu finden unter http://digilander.libero.it/arupin/castiel8.html and http://digilander.libero.it/arupin/castiel9.html. Der name im Originaltext (nicht italienisch) ist "Garzuoto". Ich konnte nichts weiteres über diese Form des Namens finden.
